In Kenya, the deadline to file your tax returns is on 30th June, failure to which a fine of Ksh. 2,000 will be imposed on your account. I encourage you to do this as soon as possible, for peace of mind and to avoid slow system speeds in the last minute.
The process is not that complicated, and in this post am going to share a complete guide on how you can file your Individual Tax Returns (Employment Income Tax) by downloading and filling the Excel Sheet as per your P9 Form.
Before we proceed, here are the Requirements;
- KRA PIN Number and Password
- Your P9 Form (Given by your employer)
Step 1. Log into your KRA Account on the web portal, by using this link: http://itax.kra.go.ke.
Once you have successfully logged into your account (iPage) you should see the following page, then hover on the returns tab and click ‘File Returns’.
Select the type of return and the period. Download the excel sheet using the link given, and open the archive to open the file. Once you have successfully enabled Macros, the Income Tax Resident Individual Tax Return Excel form should open with ease and allow you input the figures with ease.
The tabs that you will be required to fill on the excel sheet includes the following:
- Basic Info
- Employment Income
- Details of PAYE Deducted
- Tax Computation
A negative figure in your KRA Return means that you are due for a refund from KRA. (You will be required to enter banking details if you find a negative figure).
A positive figure in your KRA Return means that you owe KRA.
Once done, click on the Validate button to validate the data on the Income Tax Resident Individual Excel sheet. The validated document will be stored in the documents folder of your computer, ready to be uploaded.
